Dongying is the place where the Yellow River flows into the sea. As a Chinese poem goes, “Don’t you espy the Yellow River flows down the sky, surging to the sea and not returning for aye.” The Yellow River, the mother river of the Chinese nation, surges and flows into the vast Bohai Sea here in Dongying. The surging river and vast sea compose the fertile and beautiful Yellow River Delta. Dongying District is the hometown of Lv Opera, one of the influential local operas of China. With a history of over a hundred years, Lv Opera is attractive and suits both refined and popular tastes.

I’m Julia, a foreign teacher the Republic of Belarus. I have lived in Dongying for half a year. Today, I come here to experience our profound Lv Opera culture upon the invitation of the Lv Opera Protection and Inheritance Development Center of Dongying District.

Hi, what are you signing?

Hi, I’m signing an excerpt of Sanlafang, a traditional Lv Opera of Shandong.

Are you a teacher here?

I’m Wang Lingling, the inheritor of Lv Opera, the intangible cultural heritage.

Nice to meet you.

Thank you.

Can you teach me some actions?

Of course. Let’s move to our costume room.

I will pick a dress for you, try them on.

How about his?

Very beautiful.

This one?

This for male and that is for an old man.

This one is for a female role, in other words, a girl a respectable family.

How about this one?

Very beautiful.

Try it.

Is it very heavy?

Yes.

So opera performers are all hard workers, just as a Chinese saying goes, “One minute on the stage needs ten years practice off stage.”
